Welcome to the Shaw Festival. This year our festival is filled with great delights - wonderful performances, free events, and lots of fun - as well as workshops, master classes and informative demonstrations.
It is a special year for us, one in which we have focused on the Shaw Festival mission not only to bring nationally and internationally renowned artists into our midst, but to give back to the community through free events and community partnerships designed to showcase local artists.
The Shaw Festival is set to enrapture festival lovers once again. Our venue will leave you fascinated, captivated and enthralled. With performances ranging from classic to contemporary, traditional to avant-garde, each act will inspire you to greater heights.
Shaw Festival The Shaw Festival is an art theatre rather than a commercial theatre - hence its status as a non-profit and charitable organization. Still, it is run in a very businesslike and efficient manner. Over 75% of our annual revenue comes from Box Office sales and other earned revenue. We produce 10 to 12 plays each season, with over 800 performances in our 3 theatres, to audiences totaling about 300,000 people. The Shaw Festival was started in 1962 by Niagara-area lawyer and playwright Brian Doherty. During the summer, Mr. Doherty organized eight weekend performances of Don Juan in Hell and Candida by Bernard Shaw under the title "Salute to Shaw". For this event, the Assembly Room in the historic Court House on Queen Street was converted into a small theatre.
